Many of the world’s largest technology companies are in the San Francisco Bay Area. In particular, Silicon Valley. Initially the name Silicon Valley was given because of the silicon chip manufacturers. Now Silicon Valley is known as the factory for high tech innovation and Venture Capitalist. Silicon Valley is the world’s technology engine.
The Navy had an air base which is now called Moffett Field in Sunnyvale. A lot of technology companies were near the area. When the Navy moved their operations from there to San Diego, the company that ended up replacing the Navy was NASA. Many of the companies in the area stayed and aerospace industry was the majority.
The most influential individual to the development of Silicon Valley is Frederick Terman. He got his undergraduate degree at Stanford. Went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to earn his Doctorate. Came back to Stanford to teach. He noticed how Stanford needed to enhance its focus and offerings to students in the radio and communications field.
